Delivering concrete benefits for the climate and energy security
Our impact is measured through tangible results: avoided emissions, preserved land, waste diverted from landfill, and alternative energy sources that strengthen the resilience of communities and economies.
Reducing emissions at every stage
Our technology transforms residual materials into value while reducing their environmental impact throughout their life cycle.
-
Divert waste from landfill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with end-of-life disposal.
-
Reduce reliance on fossil resources by converting residual materials into valuable products.
-
Offer an alternative to conventional waste incineration, generating fewer pollutant emissions, less hazardous waste, and a smaller volume of material requiring final disposal.
Unlike first-generation biofuels derived from intensive crops such as corn and soybeans, Enerkem's technology does not require agricultural land. By using non-recyclable waste as a feedstock, we help preserve arable land and avoid the land-use pressures associated with conventional biofuel production.
By diverting waste from landfill, we help reduce reliance on disposal sites and preserve land for future generations. A standard Enerkem facility can process up to 400,000 tonnes of waste per year, transforming materials that would otherwise be landfilled into value-added resources that support a more circular economy.
While electrification plays a critical role in the energy transition, it cannot, on its own, meet the needs of every sector. Aviation, maritime transport, and the chemical industry require high-energy-density fuels and feedstocks to power their operations.
Enerkem provides practical solutions to reduce emissions in these hard-to-abate sectors through the low-carbon circular molecules it produces, including methanol, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and chemical intermediates. These products can be integrated into existing infrastructure, helping accelerate the transition to a lower-carbon economy while minimizing the need for significant operational changes.
Maritime shipping accounts for more than 80% of global trade, yet it remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels. As regulations such as FuelEU Maritime and the IMO’s decarbonization targets accelerate the transition to low-carbon fuels, the industry must act quickly.
Enerkem’s renewable methanol is a proven drop-in solution that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, sulfur emissions and particulate matter, while remaining compatible with existing engines and infrastructure.
The aviation industry has committed to an ambitious emissions reduction pathway through frameworks such as CORSIA and ReFuelEU Aviation. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are essential to achieving these targets.
Our approach transforms waste into low-carbon methanol, which can then be converted into SAF through proven third-party technologies.
This pathway provides airlines with a sustainable alternative to conventional jet fuel, reducing lifecycle carbon intensity while helping prepare for evolving regulatory requirements.
For the chemical industry, the challenge is not only about energy—it is also about carbon. Plastics and chemical products require sustainable carbon sources to replace fossil-based feedstocks.
By transforming waste into circular methanol, we provide manufacturers with the building blocks needed to produce circular plastics, solvents and olefins. This helps support growing demand for recycled content, circularity and lower-carbon products.
