Decarbonizing maritime shipping with sustainable methanol

 Faites défiler pour découvrir

Maritime shipping accounts for 80% of global trade, yet it faces unprecedented regulatory pressure to reduce emissions. Enerkem’s renewable methanol offers a proven, immediate and infrastructure-compatible solution to help move your fleet toward net-zero emissions.

The maritime challenge by the numbers

3%

of global CO₂ emissions come from maritime shipping

95%

of maritime transport still relies on fossil-based marine fuels

target year for the IMO to begin implementing obligations under its Net-Zero Framework

With growing climate requirements, securing long-term access to sustainable methanol has become a strategic challenge for the shipowners.

Aligned with decarbonization goals

Low-carbon methanol can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. It helps shipowners meet regulatory requirements, including FuelEU Maritime, while advancing their decarbonization objectives.

Technology available today

Unlike many alternative fuels that are still under development, methanol-powered marine engines are already commercially available and in operation with leading shipping companies around the world.

Diverse feedstock sources

Methanol can be produced from non-recyclable waste, residual biomass, captured CO₂ and renewable hydrogen. This diversity of feedstocks strengthens energy security and reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Lower air pollutant emissions

Methanol contains virtually no sulfur and produces very low levels of particulate matter. It can also help reduce NOx emissions, contributing to improved air quality in ports and along shipping corridors.

Rapidly expanding global infrastructure

Methanol is already a globally traded commodity with an established supply chain. At the same time, ports around the world are rapidly expanding bunkering capabilities, particularly along major shipping corridors.

Not necessarily. Methanol is compatible with modern dual-fuel engines that are already commercially available. For existing fleets, retrofit solutions are also available and are generally less complex and less costly than those required for some alternative fuels, such as hydrogen.

Today, renewable methanol generally costs more than heavy fuel oil (HFO). However, evolving climate regulations are steadily increasing the true cost of fossil fuels. Sustainable methanol allows shipowners to anticipate these changes, reduce emissions and better manage long-term compliance and fuel costs.

Yes. Methanol is already one of the most widely traded chemical commodities in the world and is available in major international ports. Bunkering infrastructure is expanding rapidly to support its growing adoption as a marine fuel.

By producing renewable methanol locally from waste, Enerkem also helps strengthen supply security and supports the development of more resilient fuel supply chains for major port hubs.
