We transform non-recyclable waste into valuable products, unlocking the potential of an abundant and locally available resource. In doing so, we help reduce landfill waste, support climate action and strengthen local energy security.
Turning waste into sustainable products
What sets our technology apart?
-
Commercially proven
Proven reliability in industrial operations
Validated by world-class industrial partners
-
Flexible
Diverse local feedstock supply options
Production of multiple low-carbon circular products
-
Scalable
Converts large volumes of waste into significant quantities of valuable end products
Our gasification process follows four key steps:
- Feedstock preparation
- Gasification
- Syngas cleaning and conditioning
- Product synthesis and purification
Our platform helps decarbonize sectors where electrification is more challenging.
From maritime shipping and aviation to chemical products, discover how our low-carbon circular molecules deliver impact where it matters most.
As a technology provider, we offer licenses for our proprietary platform, specialized equipment and operational support to help partners develop and operate their own biorefineries.
We also support project development by identifying suitable sites, securing financing, engaging strategic partners and establishing offtake agreements.
We start where mechanical recycling stops. Traditional methods have their limits: complex, contaminated, or mixed plastics still too often end up in landfills. Thanks to our gasification technology, we break down these rejected materials at the molecular level to turn them back into virgin products.

Incineration burns waste to generate heat and, in some cases, electricity, releasing the carbon it contains directly into the atmosphere.
Gasification takes a different approach. By heating waste in a low-oxygen environment, it breaks down the molecules in the material and recovers their carbon and hydrogen as syngas. This syngas is then converted into new products, such as methanol.
Rather than destroying the carbon contained in waste, gasification is a chemical manufacturing process that recovers and repurposes it to create new low-carbon fuels and circular chemicals.

No. While the process requires heat, Enerkem’s technology is designed to be largely energy self-sufficient. Much of the energy required is generated internally through the process itself. In addition, excess heat is recovered and reused on site to dry waste and residual biomass, improving overall energy efficiency.

Gasification and pyrolysis are both thermochemical processes that convert residual materials in the absence of, or with very limited, oxygen. The key difference lies in the intermediate products they generate and their intended end uses.
Pyrolysis primarily converts materials into oils, waxes and gases, which typically require additional processing before being transformed into higher-value products.
Gasification, the technology used by Enerkem, directly converts non-recyclable waste into syngas, a versatile mixture composed mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Syngas serves as a chemical platform that can be transformed into circular methanol, sustainable fuels and other low-carbon chemical products.
Through its gasification and reforming process, Enerkem maximizes the recovery of the carbon contained in waste by reintegrating it into new products rather than releasing it as emissions. This approach supports both the circular economy and the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors.
