Ecoplanta in Spain serves as our benchmark project. The facility will process 400,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste and residual biomass to produce 240,000 tonnes of renewable and circular methanol. Led by energy giant Repsol, the project represents an investment of more than €800 million.
A strong industrial legacy driving future growth
Edmonton Alberta Biofuels: the world’s first facility to convert waste into biofuels
Developed in partnership with the City of Edmonton, the facility marked a major milestone in the commercialization of waste-to-value technologies, helping validate Enerkem’s platform and laying the groundwork for future large-scale projects.
Key achievements
- Demonstrated the industrial viability of Enerkem’s technology
- Validated Enerkem’s technology with Shell, Suncor, Repsol, and other leading global industrial partners
- Obtained ISCC and ISCC Plus certification for the methanol produced
- Secured U.S. EPA and British Columbia LCFS certification for ethanol
- Developed world-class expertise in deploying Enerkem’s gasification technology
- Validated regulatory frameworks
- Explored market opportunities for waste-derived biofuels and circular products
Having fulfilled its mission of validating the technology and generating the critical engineering data needed to support its commercialization, this pioneering facility concluded operations in 2024.
Varennes Carbon Recycling: proven execution and delivery capabilities
Designed to process 200,000 tonnes of feedstock and produce 100,000 tonnes of sustainable methanol annually, Varennes Carbon Recycling (VCR) represents a significant step forward in Enerkem’s commercialization journey, demonstrating the scalability of its technology and its capacity to deliver complex industrial projects.
Key achievements
- Global supply chain: VCR enabled us to secure critical equipment suppliers capable of meeting the quality standards required for our facilities, including Ecoplanta.
- Execution capability: Enerkem completed the fabrication and delivery of 95% of the technology-specific equipment modules for VCR, representing more than 5,500 tonnes of equipment.
- Partnership model: The project demonstrated our ability to bring together and lead large industrial consortia, aligning strategic partners (Shell, Suncor, and Proman), investors, and governments around a shared vision.
In 2025, the project faced financial challenges and was acquired by StormFisher, which assumed responsibility for its development and elected to evolve the technology configuration in line with its own strategic vision.
Enerkem’s Innovation Center plays a pivotal role in advancing our technology leadership and staying ahead of market trends. Here, our researchers test new feedstocks, optimize our processes, and develop the solutions that will power the circular economy of tomorrow.
As a technology provider, we offer licenses for our patented platform, specialized equipment, and operational support to enable our partners to operate their own biorefinery. We also develop projects by identifying suitable sites and financing opportunities, securing strategic partnerships, and connecting projects with off-takers.
